Dell Compellent Upgrade How To

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Hi all,
I’ll try to explain, based on my experience, which is the best way to run successfully a CML upgrade. We have different scenarios:

  1. Firmware upgrade
  2. Storage expansion
  3. Hardware upgrade

Firmware Upgrade

First of all you have to understand the starting point and the ending point. It is really important which firmware is currently running on your environment and which you want to update to.

Example 1:

If you are running 6.4.5 firmware and you want to go to 6.5.20 you can go directly with just an upgrade process

Example 2:

If you are running 6.3.10 firmware and you want to got o 6.5.20 you have to run and intermediate firmware upgrade to 6.4.x before going to 6.5.20

When the starting point and the ending point is clear follow this steps:

  1. Contact Copilot/Dell support
  2. Run a Phone Home from the storage center
  3. Let Copilot makes all the pre checks needed before upgrading
  4. Download the version approved by Compilot
  5. Execute the upgrade
  6. Call Copilot to run post checks

Storage Expansion

In this scenario you have need to add more disks on the Storage Center. If you need to ad SSD disks you have to pay attention at which firmware version you are running because could not be supported to add them. So:

  1. Contact Copilot/Dell support
  2. Run a Phone Home from the storage center
  3. If necessary run steps 3-4-5-6 from the Firmware upgrade procedure
  4. Rack all the equipment
  5. Cabling following the System connectivity guide
  6. Connect to storage Center and manage new disks

Hardware upgrade

For the last scenario there is a wonderful DELL’s guide you can reach at this link:
